SAM LINDER Sam Linder was born in Russia in December of 1913. He was orphaned at an early age and was therefore sent to Canada to live with his aunt and uncle in Winnipeg. Sam leaves to mourn his son, Buddy (Perky) and daughter, Zivia; two granddaughters, Mara and Debra. Sam was the owner and operator of the Pickles Tent and Awning Company on Ellice Avenue. After many years of operation he decided to retire. Following retirement he went to work for Army and Navy Surplus Store for Nate Bogash. He loved to work there. Nate and Sam became Winnipegs version of the "Odd Couple". They were inseparable. Sam cherished his fellow employees at the store, and they in turn loved him as well. The family wishes to thank Elizabeth Posen and family for giving Sam such enjoyment in his latter years. Sam had many, many friends. But one stands out, and that is his friend Lou Leibl. They were like brothers. Theirs was a true and rare friendship. Thank you, Lou, for everything. He had many hobbies, but the one that takes precedent was his dill pickles. Sam enjoyed making dill pickles in his basement on Cordova Street, but it soon became bigger than "Bicks" when it moved to the Leibl kitchen. There, many of Sams friends learned the "Secret Recipe" and the art of making pickles. Many of us who were the recipients of those tasty jars will miss Sams yearly visit with his famous jar of pickles. In his later years, a new girl stole his heart and that was his beloved doggie, Pepi. His favourite pastime was taking Pepi for walks in the park and puttering in his yard with his dog by his side. He also loved the Sunday breakfasts with Ashley Leibl and his family, and the fishing trips they took together. Best of all, Sam will always be remembered with his cigar in one hand and a glass of brandy in the other. The family wishes to thank Bobbie Brown and Auntie Miriam for their support and guidance during this very difficult time. And finally thanks to all of Sams friends and acquaintances who are here today to say farewell to our dear friend. The funeral service was held on Monday, May 27. Pallbearers were Bill Narvey, Bob Brown, Allan Bogoch, Sunny Rose, Billy Feldman and Perry Rose.
